I met Jennifer Hughes on a road rally, a bunch of crazy people in cars chasing after clues all day, just prior to going to the Alps. She had skied there before and gave me pointers on where to go.

When I returned from the Alps, I went boarding with Jen, a skier, for the first time. That evening she and another friend talked about Mark Bennett holding the world record for the most vertical skied in a day. She turned to me and said, "You and I could do that. We could set the first women's* ski, snowboard and group vertical record." My response was, "Let's do it!" They mentioned how much vertical Mark had done (294,340 vertical feet), and the magnitude of his achievement didn't even register. At that point, I had never even been heli-skiing before, but I was up for the challenge. I wanted to find out if I had a limit.

We set the first women's record and broke the world record (Mark Bennett's) in the process.
